Mayor of Newham extends a warm welcome to Show visitors
Sir Robin Wales, mayor of Newham, is delighted the British International Motor Show has returned to the east London borough. “This is a great opportunity for us to show that Newham can host big international events and give people from across the nation and beyond, a glimpse of what will follow when we welcome the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games,” he said.
Situated three miles from the City of London, Newham is home to much of London’s revitalised docklands, London City Airport and the ExCeL exhibition centre. It will also host the 2012 London Games. “Newham is very much a global village, such is our great diversity. We have more than 110 languages spoken in our schools. I am sure exhibitors and visitors from here and around the world will get a very warm welcome.”
Anyone wanting more information about the borough and the opportunities it can offer should visit the Newham Council information stand at the Show or www.newham.gov.uk
Mazda’s challenge is zoom zoom not speed speed
Proving a big hit in the outside arena is Mazda’s Zoom Zoom driving challenge. But while the event might initially look like a race against the clock around a tight, twisting course, Mazda’s Samantha Williams said it was not so simple.

After a familiarisation lap, visitors are timed around the course, but abuse of the car won’t win them any prizes. “Visitors get to drive two cars around the course, our new Mazda2 supermini and the Mazda MX-5 sports car,” Samantha said. “The instructors analyse five different aspects of how the car is driven, one of which is mechanical sympathy – how well the driver treats the car.”

At the end of the show a winner will be declared and will be given the use of a Mazda2 Sport for a year. Some 5000 visitors are expected to try out their driving skills throughout the duration of the Show and Mazda say that the challenge has already proven very popular.
